Functions of the ACVCI
ACVCI works to support lawful awareness, human rights protection, public guidance and social responsibility through organized activities.
- Complaint Inquiry: Inquire suo moto or on a petition presented by a victim or any person on the victim's behalf into complaints related to human rights concerns, violation or abetment of human rights, and negligence by a public servant in preventing such violations.
- Legal Proceeding Support: Intervene in proceedings involving allegations of human rights violation pending before a court, with permission of such court.
- Institution Visits: Visit jails or state-controlled institutions where persons are detained, treated, reformed or protected, and study living conditions with proper intimation to the state government.
- Safeguard Review: Study safeguards provided by the Constitution or any law for protection of human rights and suggest measures for effective implementation.
- Remedial Measures: Review factors, including terrorism, that inhibit enjoyment of human rights and suggest appropriate remedial measures.
- Treaty Awareness: Study treaties and international instruments on human rights and make suggestions for effective implementation.
- Rule of Law: Promote the rule of law at national and international levels.
- Human Rights Education: Support human rights education and strengthen public awareness.
- Research Promotion: Undertake and promote research in the field of human rights.
- Public Literacy: Spread human rights literacy through publications, media, seminars and other available means.
- Voluntary Organization Support: Encourage voluntary organizations and institutions working in human rights.
- Necessary Public Functions: Perform such other functions as may be considered necessary for promotion of human rights.
